"Icon, white arrow with bullseye on navy background" Learning objectives

By the end of this section, you will be able to do the following:

  • Discuss structural organisation of the body
  • Identify the different body systems
  • Explain the process of homeostasis
  • Describe the different body fluid compartments, and provide an estimate (%) of each of these compartments
  • Explain how water balance is maintained in the body
  • Define the terms osmosis and osmotic pressure and describe how they influence homeostasis
  • Apply anatomical terms correctly and locate various anatomical areas on an animal
  • Apply directional terms correctly
  • Apply the terminology of anatomy, in order to understand the descriptions of body parts and their relative positions to one another
  • Identify body planes and sections on models, charts or preserved specimens
