Open licences: Creative Commons

Creative Commons, the organisation, was founded in 2001 to promote global collaboration by empowering creators to share their works more openly, counteract restrictive copyright norms, and help build a thriving commons of shared knowledge and culture.

The Creative Commons (CC) licences are a series of free, standardised public licences that enable creators to retain their copyright while allowing others to revise, reuse and build upon their works.

What you’ll learn:

  • the scope and structure of CC licences
  • how to legally use and attribute works with CC licences
  • prerequisites for licensing your own work under CC
  • considerations for choosing a CC licence
  • how to apply a CC licence to your own work
  • considerations when adapting and remixing works to create new material
