Conclusion

Group work is exciting

Group work is an ancient and contemporary activity used by many professions; it is also an exciting social work practice. Social work group work is established in most, if not all, fields within education, health and human services. Hence, most social workers will practice group work at some stage of their careers.

This anthology presents our vision of group work and shares group activities for busy practitioners, students, volunteers, and academics through the lens of people studying social work and working in education, health, and/or human services. The vision is rich and diverse. It highlights that social work group work allows people to reflect on their situation and needs. Our practice approach assumes that people can experience transformational moments, change and grow in groups.

Limitations

This anthology introduces the breadth of social work group work in a wide range of settings. However, not all fields of group work are presented. For example, this anthology does not include session plans for family and significant others group meetings, such as those common in case management. Regardless of the limitations, this anthology does show the potential of social work group work. We look forward to hearing what others are doing regarding social work group work.
