Chapter 4. Session plans for social work groups

Chapter 4. Session plans for social work groups describes 13 group work activities and shares the associated session plans.

The activities in sections 4.1 through 4.4 need to occur in professional settings, follow evidence-based processes and have appropriate professional support such as access to counsellors.

The groups are categorised as: therapeutic, educational or information, social, and research and advocacy. Each group activity listed in sections 4.1 through 4.4 aims to support a group’s performing and adjourning phases.

Regarding the timeframe, each group work activity takes fifteen to forty-five minutes. No special resources or preparation are required for the following activities unless otherwise indicated .

We recommend that facilitators conduct their own risk analysis before they begin a group and decide on the activities to ensure there is no harm for potential group members.

With respect to the participants, the activities can be adapted and used with most groups unless indicated otherwise.
